GOMA, DR Congo, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday condemned the use of drones in the city of Goma, capital of North Kivu Province.
Explosions were heard on Wednesday morning. The March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group attributed a drone strike to the Congolese government's military forces.
According to a provisional toll released by M23, three people were killed, including a French national working for the United Nations Children's Fund.
Several witnesses reported that bombs were dropped during the morning, about 4:00 a.m. local time, triggering powerful explosions in some neighborhoods of the city.
The Congolese government had not immediately reacted.
Goma, a major regional urban hub, has been under the control of M23 rebels since late January 2025.
According to local media reports, fighting has intensified in recent weeks on several fronts between Congolese government forces and M23 rebels in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. ■
