ADDIS ABABA, March 11 (Xinhua) -- At least 30 people were killed in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in southern Ethiopia, local authorities have confirmed.

In a social media post, the Gamo Zone administration of South Ethiopia Regional State said the landslides occurred on Tuesday due to heavy rains, which caused flooding in several localities across three districts.

Authorities also noted that debris from landslides and floodwaters blocked public transport routes, disrupted movement and complicated rescue operations in affected areas.

South Ethiopia Regional State President Tilahun Kebede expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families on Tuesday, assuring that the regional government will provide all necessary support to the affected.

"Since it is rainy season and accidents like this can happen again, I call on the communities living in vulnerable areas to take necessary precautions," Kebede said.

Ethiopia is currently in the midst of a rainy season, which started in February and is expected to last until March.
