NAIROBI, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Michelle Mutindi relished the admiration of spectators as she confidently strode onto the stage during a Spring Festival gala in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, wearing the traditional Chinese mamianqun, or the horse-face skirt.
Performing as the final group at the glittering event, Mutindi and her fashion crew hogged the spotlight for a seamless fusion of Chinese and African fashion on the runway.
The horse-face skirt, known for its pleated structure, elegant silhouette, and decorative patterns, has in recent years gained renewed popularity among young people in China and abroad.
Mutindi said she fell in love with the garment last year when she first wore it during a fashion show held at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya.
"Since then, my love for the outfit has continued," she said.
She particularly praised the fusion of traditional Chinese design with African-inspired prints, which she believes makes the skirts stand out on the runway.
"I have taken part in two fashion shows during Chinese cultural events while wearing the Chinese skirt. It is designed in a very unique way. With African prints, it makes someone stand out," Mutindi said.
She added that the outfit could also be adapted for special occasions in Kenya, such as dowry ceremonies and weddings.
Fellow model Nyakuar John said wearing the horse-face skirt has added a new dimension to her modeling experience. Introduced to the outfit by Mutindi, Nyakuar was immediately drawn to its elegance, soft fabric, and vibrant colors.
"It brings two cultures together -- it looks African and at the same time Chinese. Learning how to wrap it was something new and interesting," she said, noting that photos of her in the outfit have drawn widespread praise on social media.
As an aspiring model, she hopes to see more creative fusion between African and Chinese fashion traditions, emphasizing authenticity and cultural identity shared by both cultures.
Sarah Nyawira, a manager at a local tour firm, said the outfit's blend of Chinese and African cultural elements, elegant patterns, and comfort makes it particularly appealing.
"Every time I wear it, people ask me where I purchased it. I usually wear it during special events, and I truly value it," she added. ■
