At least 9 killed in illegal mining pit collapse in Ghana

ACCRA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people died and four others injured on Saturday when an illegal mining pit collapsed in central Ghana, the Ghana Police Service confirmed on Monday.

Chief Inspector Kwadwo Boakye, spokesperson for the Ahafo Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, told Xinhua that the incident occurred in the Atta ne Atta community of Asutifi South District, Ahafo Region.

Upon arrival at the scene, the police retrieved nine bodies from the collapsed pit, the spokesperson said, adding that all victims were male and working in a pit on a cocoa farm.

Police teams and excavators were deployed to the site to search for survivors or additional victims, but no further bodies were found. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the collapse.
