DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania has called for reinforced institutional cooperation and sustainable management of the Nile River to safeguard one of Africa's most vital shared resources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation said in a statement Sunday.
The call was made by Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Mahmoud Thabit Kombo during a high-level Nile Basin meeting held on the sidelines of the African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Kombo emphasized the need to strengthen governance structures to ensure the equitable utilization of the river, according to the statement.
Kombo noted that permanent institutional frameworks would enhance coordination, deepen trust, and provide structured mechanisms for resolving differences among member states. He underscored that cooperative management is essential for long-term water security, economic stability, and regional harmony.
Kombo also expressed support for the Nile Basin Investment Program, which includes strategic projects aimed at strengthening water security, boosting energy generation, improving food systems, and enhancing environmental conservation.
He highlighted the importance of joint investments in infrastructure, climate resilience, and renewable energy to address shared challenges while unlocking opportunities for inclusive growth, the statement added. ■
