DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba on Friday urged citizens to safeguard national unity by promoting harmony between farmers and livestock keepers, warning that division along occupational lines could undermine peace and development.
Speaking in Handeni district, Tanga region, Nchemba cautioned against discrimination based on livelihoods, noting that both farmers and herders are equal citizens entitled to work nationwide as long as they abide by the law.
The prime minister stressed that professional differences should not foster division or mutual discrimination, which he said could jeopardize national stability.
Given the growing population and livestock numbers, Nchemba noted that effective land-use planning is essential to prevent conflicts over limited resources. He added that isolated misconduct should not be used to stigmatize entire communities.
Nchemba emphasized that the government will not tolerate lawlessness or violence stemming from land disputes. He called on leaders at all levels to prioritize peace, stating that stability is a prerequisite for implementing development plans. ■
