Botswanan minister hails Spring Festival as platform for cultural exchange with China

GABORONE, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Botswanan Minister for State President Moeti Mohwasa said the celebration of the Chinese Spring Festival is a "culturally significant occasion" and a vital platform for cultural exchange.

Speaking at the Spring Festival reception held at the Chinese Embassy in Botswana on Tuesday evening, Mohwasa said that the Chinese Spring Festival, a time-honored tradition, is a moment of renewal, reflection and fresh beginnings.

"It is a celebration that unites families, communities and nations, reminding us of the universal values of harmony, humanity and mutual respect that bind us all," he noted.

"Events such as this provide a vital platform for cultural traditions, allowing us to appreciate the richness of Chinese traditions, cuisine, music, and heritage while deepening the bonds of friendship between our peoples," the minister said.

Mohwasa said the diplomatic relations between Botswana and China in the past over 50 years has advanced with unwavering friendship and collaboration that have yielded tangible benefits for both nations, and flourished partnership across diverse fields, including education, health, infrastructure, trade, investment, and cultural exchange, "enriching the lives of our people."

He also commended the Chinese community for their invaluable contribution to Botswana's economy, society and cultural fabric, expressing confidence on renewed energy and momentum to the bilateral relations in the Chinese new year.

Chinese Ambassador to Botswana Fan Yong said that the strong synergy between Botswana's 12th National Development Plan and China's 15th Five-Year Plan offers broad prospects for further cooperation.

"As the year of 2026 has also been designated the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, we will promote mutual learning between our civilizations, and consolidate the foundation of our cooperation, in the spirit of deepening understanding and fostering closer bonds between the people of China and Africa," said the ambassador.

The event drew over 300 participants, including government officials, diplomats, representatives of international organizations and universities, and members of the Chinese community and enterprises in Botswana. It featured a lion dance, modern dance, and songs in Chinese and Tswana language.
