CONAKRY, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Heavy gunfire was heard on Tuesday near the central prison in the capital of Guinea Conakry, amid reports that armed elements extracted Commander Toumba Diakite from custody, sources said.
According to the sources, Diakite was removed from Conakry Central Prison while hooded and later driven to an unknown destination. No official confirmation was immediately available.
Diakite, also known as "Toumba," whose full name is Aboubacar Sidiki Diakite, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in July 2024 in connection with the trial over the Sept. 28, 2009 stadium massacre in Conakry.
According to local media, more than 150 people were killed during a rally at a stadium in Conakry on Sept. 28, 2009. ■
