KAMPALA, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and several others sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision in Uganda's central district of Kassanda late on Sunday.
Lameck Kigozi, police spokesperson for Wamala region, told Xinhua on Monday that the accident involved a passenger bus and a commuter passenger taxi at Kyakatebe, along the Mityana-Mubende-Kabarole Highway, at around 6:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT).
The bus, belonging to Link Bus Services, was traveling from the capital city Kampala to the western district of Kabarole, while the taxi was heading in the opposite direction.
"The driver of the taxi, on reaching Kyakatebe, attempted to overtake an unknown vehicle, not knowing that there was an oncoming bus from the opposite direction. The taxi and bus had a head-on collision," Kigozi said.
"The accident was very disastrous for the passengers of the taxi. Six of them died on the spot. Many got injured," he added.
The injured were rushed to Mityana General Hospital for treatment.
The police spokesperson attributed the cause of the road accident to reckless driving. ■
