ABUJA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Multiple people were feared killed and others injured after a suspected Boko Haram terrorist attack on a group of laborers in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, multiple sources said Friday.

About a dozen bodies were buried after the incident at Wajirko, a village along the Maiduguri-Damboa road on Thursday, local media reported, citing Aliu Zaifada, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress party in that part of the country.

All the victims were laborers repairing a bridge damaged during previous attacks by Boko Haram, said sources, who feared the death toll was between 10 and 20.

"Following the assault, 10 of the deceased who were identified as Muslims were buried at the emir's palace in Biu in accordance with Islamic rites," said Zaifada, describing the killing as "a stark reminder" of the volatile security situation in the region.

Another source said the injured victims were sent to a nearby hospital in Biu, a town in southern Borno state.

Neither the government nor security authorities have so far commented on the attack.
