NAIROBI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The adoption of green energy across Africa has accelerated, thanks to availability of quality and affordable solar solutions from China, a business executive said on Tuesday in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.
Georg Pflomm, the project manager at the Competence Center for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Economy of AHK Services Eastern Africa Limited, said that Chinese manufactured solar products have boosted energy diversification and security in a continent keen to advance low-carbon growth.
"In recent years, many of the global players in the solar sector are nowadays from China. There are also many companies which produce very good components," Pflomm said, adding that China remains a strategic player in the global solar solutions value chain, benefiting African countries in their quest to boost green energy installation in their national grid.
According to Pflomm, African countries installed a total capacity of 2.4 gigawatts (GW) of new solar in 2024 and a 42-percent growth in new installations was expected in 2025.
"That shows there is a very strong market growth in terms of solar. The total capacity of installed solar in all of Africa is now around 20 GW, and by 2028, we expect an additional 23 GW," said Pflomm.
He added that the current solar installed capacity in the continent is expected to increase by more than two-fold in the next three or four years, while the two biggest solar markets in Africa were South Africa and Egypt, with East African countries like Kenya following suit. ■
