South Sudan hosts over 600,000 refugees, asylum seekers: UNHCR

JUBA, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan is hosting 605,062 refugees and asylum seekers across 161,400 households, settled in 29 locations nationwide as of December 2025, the United Nations refugee agency said on Wednesday.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in its latest report released in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, that the total figure includes 601,814 registered refugees and 3,248 asylum seekers.

It said the huge majority are Sudanese refugees, totaling 571,071 individuals, followed by 14,737 from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 7,795 from Ethiopia, 6,276 from Eritrea, 2,897 from the Central African Republic, and 2,286 from other nationalities.

Among the refugees, 49 percent are female aged 0-59 years and 76 percent are female and children combined, said the UN refugee agency.

It said Eritreans and Ethiopians form the largest groups of asylum-seeker population in South Sudan, followed by Burundians, Ugandans, and Somalis.
