WINDHOEK, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's ruling party, the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

A statement delivered on Tuesday on behalf of SWAPO Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa said that as a political organization born out of the crucibles of anti-colonialism and apartheid, SWAPO reaffirms its commitment to the principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and mutual respect among nations, principles that have long guided its own path to independence.

"We reiterate that each nation deserves to chart its own path, to preserve its own culture, and for its people to be masters of their own destiny; free from external imposition or interference," she said.

Shaningwa said the SWAPO strongly condemns the unilateral action undertaken by the United States, which they view as contrary to established norms of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

"Such measures, including military invasion of a sovereign nation and the subsequent detention of a sitting head of state, undermine the foundational tenets of diplomatic relations and pose a serious threat to global stability," she added.

Shaningwa urged all nations and international organizations to uphold the sovereignty of independent nations and to adhere strictly to international law.

"Violations of these principles not only erode trust among peoples but also hinder collective efforts towards global peace and cooperation," she said, adding that the SWAPO calls upon the international community to demonstrate unwavering solidarity with Venezuela and its president.
