LUSAKA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people were killed and 24 others seriously injured in road traffic accidents in Zambia during the New Year period, the police said Friday.

Godfrey Chilabi, spokesperson for the Zambia Police Service, said in a statement that the country recorded 136 accidents between Dec. 31, 2025, and the early hours of Friday.

The police spokesperson said that 35 accidents left 56 people with minor injuries.

Chilabi said the number of accidents recorded during the New Year period was lower than the same period last year, when the country saw 166 road traffic accidents.

Chilabi attributed the reduction in road traffic accidents to enhanced enforcement measures, including intensified patrols in accident-prone areas, speed management operations, and increased foot and motorized patrols along major highways.
