RABAT, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Morocco had foiled an attempt to smuggle 8 tonnes and 196 kg of cannabis at the Mediterranean Tanger-Med port, Moroccan police said on Friday.
A joint security operation by police and customs authorities at the port led to the seizure of drugs on Thursday, which were packaged inside plastic pipes on a transport truck registered in Morocco, police said in a statement.
The driver of the truck, a Moroccan national aged 50, had been arrested and placed under investigative custody to determine all the possible links with local and international drug-trafficking networks, the statement added.
Morocco has increased its efforts to combat drug smuggling in recent years, working with European and other international partners. ■
