LUSAKA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Zambia aims to produce about 2,160 megawatts (MW) of electricity by 2026, a level expected to close the current power deficit, Energy Minister Makozo Chikote said Thursday.

Speaking at a meeting with independent power producers to review ongoing projects, Chikote said the additional capacity would put the country on a path toward surplus generation and improved energy security.

According to a ministerial statement issued in June, Zambia's power generation was estimated at about 1,019 MW. The country faces a power shortfall of over 1,600 MW following the severe 2023/2024 drought, with hydropower accounting for 80 percent of electricity generation. In response, the Zambian government has reformed the energy sector to allow private-sector participation, attracting a growing number of independent power producers.

Chikote said that Zambia has to expand its national installed capacity beyond the current 3,800 MW to meet growing demand, which has already surpassed 2,400 MW. He emphasized continued collaboration with independent power producers, urging developers to coordinate with authorities and follow a clear roadmap defining roles, responsibilities and project timelines.
