TRIPOLI, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Libya's MedSky Airways on Thursday launched its first direct flight between the eastern city of Benghazi and the Greek capital of Athens.

In a statement published on its Facebook page, the privately-owned airline said that flight BM552 departed on Thursday morning from Benina International Airport in Benghazi to Athens International Airport, with a flight duration of about one hour and forty minutes.

The statement added that the new route comes as part of MedSky Airways' expansion plan to broaden its regional and international network, including the introduction of new destinations to several European capitals during the current year.

Flights between Libya and Greece were suspended after the turmoil in 2011 that led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. They have gradually resumed in recent years, primarily through private carriers.

MedSky Airways, headquartered in Tripoli and founded in 2022, currently operates flights to several destinations across Arab and European cities.
