TUNIS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists on Wednesday condemned Israeli drone attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was heading toward the Gaza Strip.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the syndicate said the attacks, which involved tear gas and sound bombs, were a "desperate attempt to intimidate the participants, including journalists and activists, and prevent them from carrying out their humanitarian and journalistic mission to break the blockade of Gaza and expose violations."

The syndicate said it was monitoring the situation of Tunisian journalists on board in real time. It accused Israel of violating international humanitarian law and United Nations resolutions protecting media workers and held Israel responsible for any threats to the journalists' safety.

It called on the United Nations, the International Federation of Journalists, and human rights organizations to intervene urgently to ensure the journalists' protection.

Israel imposed a naval blockade on Gaza in 2007 after Hamas seized control of the enclave, tightening restrictions following Hamas' cross-border assault into southern Israel in October 2023.
