NAIROBI, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Revenue generated from Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) freight services rose 3 percent in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Friday.

The growth in revenue was recorded despite a decrease in freight haulage during the quarter, with 1.3 million tonnes compared to 1.5 million tonnes in the same period of 2023, said the national statistics bureau.

The number of passengers handled via the SGR service stood at 531,700 during the quarter, compared to 597,500 in the same period of 2023, it said.

In 2023, an estimated 227,352 passengers travelled monthly using the SGR, according to the KNBS.

The Chinese-built train service transported over 5 million tonnes of cargo between Kenya's capital Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa during the period in 2023, an increase from 4.5 million tonnes in the same period in 2022, the KNBS said.
