KIGALI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda's forestry authority on Tuesday issued a warning about the increased threat of fires due to the hot weather marked by intense heat.

In a statement, the Rwanda Forestry Authority urged citizens across the country to take proactive measures to prevent potential blazes that could devastate natural landscapes.

"As Rwanda experiences a prolonged dry season characterized by intense heat, the risk of forest fires is heightened. All citizens are urged to exercise caution and refrain from activities that could potentially spark fires," the statement read.

The authority said forest fires can spread rapidly during drought conditions and warned residents against smoking near forests, careless disposal of cigarette butts, uncontrolled charcoal burning, and chaotic honey harvesting practices.

Additionally, it urged parents to supervise children engaged in activities such as outdoor roasting.

Experts warn that the consequences of forest fires are profound, including devastating ecosystems and endangering wildlife. The smoke emitted during fires poses serious health risks, potentially leading to respiratory illnesses due to reduced air quality.

The forestry body reaffirmed Rwanda's commitment to expanding the country's forest areas through extensive tree-planting programs and ensuring their sustainable management.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Environment, Rwanda's forests cover 30.4 percent of the country's land area.
