ALGIERS, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Saturday signed a presidential decree convening the electorate ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for September, the Algerian presidency said in a statement.
On March 21, Tebboune announced plans to hold early presidential elections on Sept. 7, following a meeting with the speakers of the parliament's upper house, the Council of the Nation, and lower house, the People's National Assembly, as well as other high-ranking officials.
Tebboune was elected in December 2019 for a five-year term and can run for a second and final term in accordance with the Algerian constitution. However, the president has not yet made any public announcement regarding a second term. ■
