KHARTOUM, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A total of 288 civilians have been killed in the western Sudanese city of El Fasher since clashes intensified on May 10, a senior official said on Friday.

"The deaths recorded since May 10 reached 288," said Ibrahim Abdullah Khatir, director-general of North Darfur State's Health Ministry.

The number of the injured in the same period reached 1,300, most of whom were women, children and the elderly, Khatir added.

Since May 10, fierce clashes have been raging in El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur State.

It is the latest escalation of the broader conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces across the country since April 15, 2023.

The deadly clashes have claimed 15,550 lives and displaced over 8.8 million people nationwide, according to estimates by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
