RABAT, June 6 (Xinhua)-- Five people were killed and 37 others hospitalized in a fire Wednesday evening in a popular market in Morocco's central city of Fez, the local news website Hespress reported.
As the capital of the Fez-Meknes administrative region, Fez is the second-largest city in Morocco and a popular tourism destination for its famous ancient city and dense handicraft workshops.
According to preliminary information, the fire, which also caused major damage to almost 25 stores, was triggered by a short-circuit resulting from repair works in a store, the official news agency MAP reported.
Authorities launched an investigation to shed light on the circumstances and causes of this incident. ■
