YAOUNDE, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno was sworn in on Thursday for a five-year term at a ceremony attended by regional leaders and other foreign dignitaries.

Last week, the Chadian Constitutional Court officially confirmed Deby's victory in the May 6 polls. Deby secured 61 percent of the vote, with Prime Minister Succes Masra coming in second with 18.54 percent.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad. According to the Constitutional Council, 75.78 percent of over 8 million registered voters cast their ballots in the presidential election.

This election was significant as it marked the end of three years of transitional military rule and a return to constitutional order in the central African country.

Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, 40, a former army general, assumed power after his father, Idriss Deby Itno, died from wounds sustained on the front line in the country's north in April 2021. He has since led a transitional government tasked with governing the central African country amid political and military crises.
