LOME, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Togo's ruling party has won a majority in the West African country's regional elections, the electoral commission said on Monday.

According to the provisional results, the Union for the Republic won 137 of the 179 regional councilor seats, while the remaining 42 seats were divided among opposition parties and independents.

The results will be sent to the Supreme Court, which will announce the final results.

The ballot was coupled with the legislative elections on April 29, with over 2,300 candidates vying for 113 seats in the National Assembly.

On Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission reported that the Union for the Republic won 108 out of 113 seats, while four opposition parties took the other five seats.

There were approximately 4.2 million registered voters, while the turnout was about 61 percent, according to Commission President Dago Yabre.
