LUSAKA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Wednesday launched the national green growth strategy, aimed at facilitating the country transition into a resilient, low carbon and socially inclusive economy.

The strategy will require a total of 10.41 billion U.S. dollars, to be sourced from both local and international channels, for its implementation.

Minister of Green Economy and Environment Collins Nzovu said the strategy will serve as the country's blueprint for meeting its ambitious economic development targets while minimizing the negative environmental impacts.

"The green growth strategy will foster sustainable economic growth and development that ensures that natural assets continue to provide the resource and environmental services on which our well-being depends on," he said during the launch of the strategy.

James Wakiaga, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) resident representative, commended the government for launching the strategy, saying the launch demonstrates that the government has recognized the need to strengthen adaptation, mitigation measures and disaster risk reduction.

He said that the strategy is in line with the UNDP's country program document for 2023-2027 and is crucial for promoting low-carbon, resource-efficient, resilient and socially inclusive economic activities. He further pledged the UNDP's support for Zambia's endeavors in sustainable environmental management, natural resource conservation, and addressing the impacts of climate change.
