TUNIS, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian National Guard units retrieved two bodies of migrants and arrested a group of smugglers, organizers of illegal crossings and several undocumented migrants, Tunis Afrique Press reported Sunday evening.
A vehicle and 12 boats used for illegal migration operations were also seized, Tunis Afrique Press reported, citing a press release issued by the Tunisian National Guard on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a National Guard patrol in Mhamdia seized a car whose owner was planning to transport eight people from sub-Saharan countries to Tunis.
Located in the central Mediterranean, Tunisia is one of the most popular transit points for illegal immigration to Europe.
Despite the stringent measures implemented by Tunisian authorities, the number of undocumented immigrants attempting to reach Italy from the Tunisian coast continues to rise. ■
