LUANDA, April 12 (Xinhua) -- A delegation with deputies from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the country's main opposition party, was attacked while working in Angola's eastern Cuando Cubango province, Friday morning, with at least eight people injured.

The attackers were alleged "a group of unidentified citizens," in an attempt to obstruct the UNITA cars from reaching the party's municipal headquarters of Cuito Cuanavale in Cuando Cubango, Angola Press Agency reported.

The Angolan National Assembly in a statement expressed regret over the incident and appealed to the population to respect peaceful coexistence, social peace, and the principles of a democratic and lawful state. It stated that this incident deserves the proper attention of the competent authorities, and the perpetrators should be held accountable.

UNITA holds 90 seats in the 220-seat Angolan National Assembly, second only to the ruling party's 124 seats.
