WINDHOEK, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba on Friday emphasized the importance of recognizing women's achievements and advocating for their rights in honor of International Women's Day, which is celebrated worldwide on March 8.
"To demonstrate our commitment to gender equality, the positions of vice-president and prime minister of the Republic of Namibia are occupied by women," Mbumba said in a statement, highlighting Namibia's commitment to increasing women's participation in decision-making roles and closing the gender gap.
Since 1990, Namibia has made significant progress in gender representation, with women now making up 49 percent of the parliament. Despite this progress, Mbumba acknowledged the ongoing challenges, particularly regarding gender-based violence.
He expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act in reducing such cases and urged continued efforts to create an inclusive society that empowers women and ensures their safety and dignity.
"Let us continue to strive for an inclusive Namibian house that is committed to investing in the empowerment of women and creating a future of shared prosperity where women are empowered to lead lives with dignity and without violence," he said. ■
