JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said here on Monday that there's severe shortage of teachers in sub-Saharan Africa as well as the rest of the world, and called for all countries to invest more in education.
Sub-Saharan Africa needs 15 million additional teachers to meet the 2030 Sustainable Developmental Goal on quality education, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stephania Giannini made the remarks in Johannesburg, South Africa, when releasing a report at the High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession.
The report revealed that 44 million additional teachers are needed globally to meet the 2030 Sustainable Developmental Goal on quality education.
Countries of the world have to spend about six percent of their gross domestic product in the education sector and train more teachers to achieve inclusive and equitable quality education, Giannini said.
There is a need to recruit and retain teachers by making the profession prestigious, and there must be a global movement to transform education, and train more teachers, said Giannini. ■
