LUSAKA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's revenue collection agency, the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), on Friday said it was investigating a total of 214 firms for Valued Added Tax (VAT) fraud.

Dingani Banda, the ZRA Commissioner-General, said so far about 29 investigations of VAT fraud have been concluded and that the offenders have since been communicated to.

Giving an update on the performance of the tax agency during a national symposium on the 2023 economic performance, the 2024 budget as well as economic outlook, the official said the agency has prioritized prosecuting VAT frauds in courts so as to set examples for would-be offenders.

According to him, a total of 11 VAT fraud cases were in various courts at various stages while nine have resulted in convictions.

According to him, the agency intends to start implementing the electronic invoicing system this year which will make it easy to detect VAT fraud between businesses.
