ABUJA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed and 12 others injured when a bus and a car recently rammed into each other in Nigeria's northern state of Jigawa, the traffic police said Friday.

Ibrahim Yahaya, a spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Jigawa, told reporters in the capital of Dutse, that the incident in the Ringim area of the state Thursday was caused by "wrongful overtaking."

Due to the flouting of traffic rules, the two vehicles had a head-on collision, Yahaya said. "The vehicles immediately went aflame and burned beyond recognition, wreaking more havoc."

The injured were rushed to a local hospital, he said, adding the remains of the deceased were either sent to a morgue or released to their families for burial.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving.
