YAOUNDE, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Saleh Kebzabo, Chad's transitional prime minister, announced the resignation of his government on Friday.

The resignation came shortly after Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the country's transitional president, promulgated a new constitution which was passed in a popular referendum on Dec. 17.

"In accordance with republican practice and custom, following the promulgation of the constitution today, I submitted to the president of the transition my resignation as prime minister, as well as that of my government," Kebzabo said in a post on his social media handles.

Kebzabo's resignation paves the way for a new government.

The political and military situation in Chad has deteriorated since 2021 following the death of former President Idriss Deby Itno. Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has since led a transitional military council to govern the country.
