DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,550 people have been killed in road accidents happening across the country, said Tanzanian Minister for Home Affairs Hamad Masauni Wednesday, who ordered the country's traffic police to reinforce efforts to end road carnage in the country.

Masauni made the remarks at a news conference held in Dar es Salaam, the commercial hub of Tanzania. Data showed there were 1,641 road accidents in the country between Jan. 1 and Dec. 12.

The latest records that were presented to the minister during a meeting with members of the National Road Safety Council in Dar es Salaam also showed that out of the 1,550 killed people, 1,189 were men and 361 were women.

"The government cannot tolerate seeing its people losing their lives in road accidents daily. This is unacceptable and it must be stopped forthwith," said Masauni.

He directed traffic police to take deterrent actions against reckless drivers who caused road accidents, including revocation of their driving licenses.
