KHARTOUM, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council on Thursday stressed its commitment to facilitating the work of humanitarian workers and overcoming relevant obstacles.
The commitment was made at a forum on humanitarian response held by the Joint National Committee for Humanitarian Emergencies in Port Sudan, the capital city of the eastern Red Sea State, the council said in a statement.
Suleiman Al-Dabailo, deputy chairman of the committee, said his country attaches great importance to facilitating the work of humanitarian workers.
He said the massive displacement of civilians since the Sudanese conflict broke out in April has put great pressure on healthcare, education, and other public services in villages and cities, highlighting the urgency to guarantee the necessary services.
Also on Thursday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement that social instability, poor communications network, staff shortfall, and bureaucratic impediments have been affecting the delivery of humanitarian assistance in many parts of Sudan.
Despite all these challenges, humanitarian partners were able to reach more than 455,000 internally displaced people and provide them with protection, relief supplies, shelter, and cash assistance, it noted.
Sudan has been witnessing deadly clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum and other areas since April 15.
More than 12,000 people have been killed so far in the clashes, while 6.6 million others have been displaced inside and outside Sudan, according to the OCHA. ■
