KIGALI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The 2023 Africa's New Cities Summit formally opened in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, Thursday with a call to explore collaborative and innovative solutions to tackle the complexities associated with the continent's urban growth.

The event, co-organized by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the Africa Infrastructure Development Association, serves as a platform for discussing challenges, finding solutions, and optimizing opportunities related to urbanization.

Speaking at the summit, Nelly Mukazayire, deputy chief executive officer of RDB, said that the summit serves as a crucial platform for the exchange of ideas, the forging of partnerships, and the exploration of innovative solutions to the complex challenges facing growing cities.

Mukazayire highlighted the aspirational nature of Africa's new cities, representing not just concrete and steel but embodying collective dreams for prosperity, sustainability, and inclusivity.

"As we embark on this journey together, let us remember that the challenges of urbanization can only be overcome through collaboration. By forging partnerships and leveraging each other's strengths, we can create cities that are resilient, dynamic, and capable of meeting the needs of current and future generations," she said.

The event, which runs until Saturday, brought together developers, builders, governments and academics, among others, to address the pressing issue of rapid urbanization in Africa.
