DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian health authorities said Friday they have planned to vaccinate 3,250,598 children below eight years of age against polio after a child had been diagnosed with polio.
"We have decided to conduct the vaccination against polio after the ministry received information on May 26 saying a one-year and 10-month child had been diagnosed with polio in Sumbawanga district in Rukwa region," Ummy Mwalimu, minister of health, told a news conference in the capital of Dodoma.
She said the vaccination will be implemented in six regions from Sept. 21 to 24.
Tumaini Nagu, chief medical officer in the Ministry of Health, said 5,291 health workers have been trained to carry out the vaccinations in the six regions.
Tanzania was certified as polio-free in 2015 after years without a new polio case. ■
