TRIPOLI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Deputy President of the Libyan Presidency Council Abdullah Allafi on Wednesday discussed the country's political crisis when meeting with Italian Ambassador to Libya Gianluca Alberini in Tripoli.

Allafi stressed the importance of the Italian role in supporting a peaceful solution to the Libyan crisis, said a statement issued by the Presidency Council.

He said that it is in the interest of Italy and the countries of the region to preserve Libya's unity and stability, the statement said.

Allafi called for activating the agreements signed between Libya and Italy in various fields, and welcomed Italian companies to resume their work in Libya, the statement added.

For his part, the Italian ambassador praised the efforts of the Presidency Council to achieve national reconciliation, stressing Italy's support for all the council's endeavors to achieve consensus and restore confidence between all political parties, the statement added.

Since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid political instability and insecurity.

Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled due to disagreements over election laws among the Libyan parties.

Earlier in January, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah said his government is ready to hold general elections in 2023.
