LUANDA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Three main submarine cables that connect the west coast of Africa to Europe were simultaneously cut off, affecting international communications between countries south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Europe, according to a statement released by Angola Cables on Wednesday.
The affected cables are WACS, SAT3, and ACE, and the rupture may have occurred approximately 150 kilometers from the mouth of the Congo River and could have been caused by the strong current of the river, the statement said. The exact details of the rupture's occurrence and causes are still unclear.
"The consortia managing the relevant submarine systems are already working to repair the cuts, and it is expected that communications will be restored by early September," the Angolan cable operator said.
Due to the incident, Angola would experience "a slight degradation" in the quality of the internet, it said, adding that the company has a backup plan to connect internet of Angola to that of Brazil and the United States. ■
