TRIPOLI, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily on Wednesday stressed the importance of buy-in from all key Libyan actors to guarantee inclusiveness in the country's electoral process.

Bathily made the remarks during a meeting with Aguila Saleh, the House of Representatives (parliament) speaker, in the eastern Libyan city of Qubba.

"We discussed the political situation in Libya, with a focus on the urgent need to finalize the legal framework prepared by the 6+6 Committee to make it implementable," Bathily tweeted.

The 6+6 committee is a joint legislative committee composed of six members from the High Council of State and six members from the House of Representatives, with the task of producing laws for the upcoming elections.

"I also emphasized the criticality of obtaining buy-in from other key Libyan actors to ensure the electoral process is inclusive. We agreed that people in Libya have the right to choose their leaders through a transparent process in a safe environment," he said.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives condemned the "abuse of powers" by the UN Support Mission in Libya, a few days after the mission issued a statement warning against the parliament's adoption of a roadmap for elections and announcement of nominations for a new government.

The committee demanded that the UN Secretary-General and the UN Security Council "obligate the UN envoy to his powers as secretariat to facilitate Libyan-Libyan dialogue and to offer positive suggestions."

Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled due to disagreements over election laws among the Libyan parties.

Ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has struggled to make a democratic transition amid escalating violence and political division.
