ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 shook the southeast of the Eritrean capital Asmara on Tuesday evening, authorities said.
The quake, which was at a depth of 10 km, occurred at 8:15 p.m. local time (1715 GMT), Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Meskel said on social media.
The epicenter was at the town of Irafalle, according to the Eritrean Ministry of Mines and Energy.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake hit around 55 km southeast of Asmara.
So far, there have been no reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake.
Asmara, which is located at over 2000 metres above sea level making it the second highest capital in Africa, was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved modernist architecture in 2017. ■
