CAIRO, July 30 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed, and 37 others wounded on Sunday as a tour bus collided with a truck on a highway in the coastal governorate of Matrouh in northern Egypt.
The accident took place earlier in the morning on Matrouh-Alexandria International Coastal Road near El-Dabaa town and ten ambulances were immediately sent to take the injuries to nearby hospitals, Matrouh Governorate said in a statement.
Mabrouk Salem, the health department's undersecretary in Matrouh, said the victims sustained varied degrees of injuries and some required surgical intervention.
Road accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt as a result of speeding, poor maintenance of roads, and lax enforcement of traffic laws.
Over the past few years, Egypt has been upgrading its road network to reduce traffic accidents. ■
