LILONGWE, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Malawian government expects to increase exports to China to boost their economic and trade cooperation, a senior official has said.
Malawi has been approved to export soya beans, dried beans and tea to China and the two sides are promoting the approval of other agricultural products such as chillies and sesame, Minister of Trade and Industry Simplex Chithyola Bandaafter told the parliament on Wednesday.
Under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China has been granting duty-free treatment to most of Malawian products exported to China since July 2008, and now more than 97 percent of Malawian product categories can be exported to China with zero tariff.
Malawi opened a consulate general in Changsha, the capital of southern China's Hunan Province, in June to enhance the economic and trade links with China.
The expansion of exports to China will improve the country's balance of payment and ease the fuel crisis and high inflation in the southern African country. ■
