GABORONE, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Botswana has banned the movement of goats and sheep, as well as their by-products such as wool, hides, and skins, from areas surrounding a village where an outbreak of mange was reported.

The outbreak occurred among small-stock animals in Otse, in Ramotsswa district, 60 kilometers south of Gaborone, the country's capital, the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement Tuesday.

Director of Veterinary Services Kefentse Motshegwa encouraged farmers and stakeholders to report animals showing clinical signs of mange, such as acute itching, scratching, and hair loss, to a veterinary facility.

Mange is a severe dermatitis caused by mite or lice infestation. Mites and lice are both ectoparasites that live on the skin and feed on dead skin, subcutaneous fluids, blood, or lymph.

Symptoms of mange include restlessness, excessive scratching, rubbing, coat damage, tiredness, stunted development, and skin damage.
