DAR ES SALAAM, June 22 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed Wednesday and 49 others injured after their bus plunged into a gorge in Tanzania's southern highlands region of Njombe, police said.
John Imori, the Njombe regional police commander, said the bus plying from the port city of Dar es Salaam to the Rukwa region plunged into the gorge after its driver had failed to overtake a truck.
"The driver of the bus attempted to overtake the truck but he could not make it and the bus plunged into the gorge as he avoided a head-on collision with another car," said Imori.
He said the accident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. local time, at Igando ward in the Wanging'ombe district. ■
