MANDERA, Kenya, June 2 (Xinhua) -- A police officer was killed and two others were wounded in an ambush by al-Shabaab militants in northeastern Kenya on Friday, local authorities said.
Al-Shabaab terrorists fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a vehicle carrying police officers in Mandera County near the Kenya-Somalia border, a regional police officer said on condition of anonymity.
"The vehicle was carrying Quick Response Unit officers on a regular patrol when they were attacked," the officer said, adding that the attackers have fled the scene and no arrests have been made.
The Somalia-based al-Shabaab militants have frequently launched attacks against security forces and civilians in the border region.
Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration of Kenya, has arrived at Garissa County in the region to attend a security meeting that aims to fight the al-Shabaab group ahead of the opening of the Kenya-Somalia border. ■
