YAOUNDE, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon on Tuesday reported 10 new confirmed cases of monkeypox in the Southwest region of the country.

Filbert Eko Eko, chief of public health for the region, said the cases were identified in Foe Bakundu and Kumba health districts of the region.

"This is the second strain of the disease in the same health districts. It is a disturbing resurgence of the virus," Eko told reporters in the regional chief town of Buea.

Monitoring and response systems in the region have been strengthened but people need to be vigilant, Eko said.

The health ministry has maintained surveillance throughout the country and taken prevention and control actions, calling on citizens to use masks in certain places and go to the nearest health centers in case of showing symptoms.

Two cases of the disease were reported in the region last year.
