HARARE, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday thanked Mozambique for its support of the Museum of African Liberation which seeks to preserve African history.

His remarks came as the global community celebrated the role of museums in society on International Museum Day held every year on May 18. This year's celebrations featured a theme: "Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing."

Situated in Zimbabwe's capital of Harare and still under construction, the continental museum narrates the African story from an African perspective and experience.

"We are honored by the commitment and unwavering support of the Republic of Mozambique to the Museum of African Liberation," Mnangagwa said when he handed over a donated piece of land to visiting Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi for the country to erect a monument at the museum in honor of the country's founding leader, Samora Machel.

Machel, who died in a plane crash more than three decades ago, played a prominent role in the liberation of Zimbabwe and other regional countries.

"We look forward to the putting up of the Samora Machel monument which will befittingly overlook one of Harare's busiest and strategic roads, Samora Machel road," Mnangagwa said.

Nyusi said the museum was the pride of the whole of Africa, and applauded Zimbabwe for hosting such an important continental facility. Nyusi is on a three-day State visit to Zimbabwe to boost bilateral ties between the two countries.
