DAR ES SALAAM, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian health authorities said Friday the government has set aside 20.75 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 8.8 million U.S. dollars) in the 2023/2024 financial year for controlling outbreaks of epidemics and highly infectious diseases.

Ummy Mwalimu, the minister for Health, told parliament in the national capital of Dodoma that the money will also be used for the construction of highly infectious disease treatment units in Dar es Salaam and Kagera regions.

Presenting her ministry's budget proposals for the 2023/2024 financial year that starts on July 1, 2023, and ends on June 30, 2024, Mwalimu said the government will strengthen measures aimed at controlling outbreaks of COVID-19 pandemic, Ebola, Marburg and cholera.

She told the House that during the forthcoming financial year, the Ministry of Health will reinforce its health multi-hazard emergency preparedness and response plan.

There will also be an improvement in public health emergency operation centers that serve as hubs for better coordinating the preparation, response, and recovery of public health emergencies, said Mwalimu.
