TRIPOLI, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Monday it had provided Libya with 55,000 doses of measles vaccine for the prevention and control of the current measles outbreak in the south of the country.

"In partnership with the Libyan Ministry of Health and the Libyan National Center for Disease Control, UNICEF Libya procured 55,000 doses of the Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccine in response to the current measles outbreak in the south of Libya," said UNICEF in a statement posted on its official Facebook page.

According to UNICEF, the vaccines arrived in Libya last week and were delivered to the Medical Supplement Department for a national vaccination campaign against MR.

The vaccination campaign, as part of a larger effort to combat the recent measles outbreak and prevent its spread to other parts of the country, will mainly target children between 9 months and 6 years old, the statement explained.

UNICEF said in the statement that "it is committed to ensuring that every child in Libya has access to life-saving vaccines" and will continue to work to improve the health and well-being of children across the country.
